Supporting Women Farmers in Climate Resilience: A Launch for Change

Prime Biodiversity Conservation is excited to share insights into our latest initiative, the “Supporting Women Farmers’ Climate Resilience in Kigali, Rwanda” project. Launched on September 5, 2024, this project aims to enhance the capacity of women farmers from the KOABIGA Cooperative in Kigali’s Kinyinya sector, empowering them to better adapt to climate change and improve their livelihoods.

This project, supported by the High Commission of Canada through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), focuses on training women farmers in climate resilience practices, providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the face of environmental challenges. By fostering sustainable agricultural practices and promoting gender equity, we aim to create a community of empowered women who can take the lead in addressing climate issues.

The launch event, held at the Marriott Hotel, was a remarkable occasion. We had the privilege of hearing from Her Excellency the High Commissioner, who emphasized the importance of supporting women in agriculture as a critical step towards sustainable development. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment also shared valuable insights on the government’s commitment to promoting gender equality in agricultural policies. She highlighted the crucial role that farmers play in our daily lives and how they are among the most affected by climate change.

In addition, we had an enlightening panel discussion featuring the Director General of MINAGRI, the CEO of Eden Care Insurance, the Managing Director of RAI Green Stalks Ltd, and a woman farmer representing others. They discussed key topics such as investment in agriculture, the importance of greenhouses for enhancing crop resilience, innovations in resilient seeds, and insuring crops to protect agricultural products, providing valuable perspectives on how to improve sustainability, productivity, and climate resilience in the agricultural sector.

Perhaps the most inspiring voices came from the women farmers themselves, who shared their experiences and aspirations. Their stories highlighted the challenges they face and the hope they have for a more resilient future. It was a powerful reminder of why this project is essential not only for environmental sustainability but also for their empowerment.

As we move forward, we are committed to supporting these women through capacity-building trainings, access to resources, and ongoing advocacy. Together, we

can make significant strides in enhancing climate resilience and improving the livelihoods of women farmers in Rwanda.

Stay tuned for updates on our progress and the impact this project will have on our community!
