At Prime Biodiversity Conservation, we believe restoring nature goes hand in hand with empowering communities. This belief drives the “Nurturing Indigenous Trees and Young Minds through Landscape Restoration in Rubavu and Rutsiro” project funded by Terafund
This initiative is more than an environmental initiative—it’s a vision of hope and sustainability for Rwanda’s Rubavu and Rutsiro districts. These regions have long suffered from the devastating effects of deforestation, facing landslides, floods, soil erosion, and a loss of biodiversity. This project represents an opportunity to reverse the damage, heal the land, and create a sustainable future where nature and humanity thrive together.
At the heart of this initiative are children, whose active participation embodies the project’s vision of nurturing a generation of environmental stewards. Through planting activities and educational sessions, these young participants develop a lasting appreciation for trees and their role in creating a healthier environment. Farmers also play a pivotal role, providing valuable insights into land use and adopting sustainable practices to ensure that the reforested areas remain thriving ecosystems for years to come.
This year, this initiative mobilized over 5000 children, over 4000 farmers, and local leaders from Rubavu and Rutsiro to take an active role in planting indigenous trees while learning about their critical importance in restoring ecosystems, mitigating climate change, and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
As a result of their combined efforts, the project successfully planted its first 60,000 indigenous trees. These trees are the first steps toward our ambitious target to restore 260 hectares of degraded land by Growing 130,000 trees by 2029. These trees will enhance water availability, conserve soil fertility, and improve biodiversity while providing economic benefits for local communities. It’s a powerful combination of ecological restoration and economic empowerment.
As we celebrate these significant milestones, we remain steadfast in our commitment to creating a greener, more resilient Rwanda. This project is about more than planting trees—it’s about nurturing young minds, teaching communities the value of sustainability, and building resilience to climate change.
Stay tuned as we continue on this journey to restore 260 hectares of land and achieve our goal of growing 130,000 trees.
Together, let’s create a greener, more sustainable future for Rwanda. One tree at a time!
